AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT
The Radeon RX 7900 XT is an enthusiast-class graphics card by AMD, launched on November 3rd, 2022. Built on the 5 nm process, and based on the Navi 31 graphics processor, in its Navi 31 XT variant, the card supports DirectX 12 Ultimate. This ensures that all modern games will run on Radeon RX 7900 XT. Additionally, the DirectX 12 Ultimate capability guarantees support for hardware-raytracing, variable-rate shading and more, in upcoming video games. The Navi 31 graphics processor is a large chip with a die area of 306 mm² and 58,000 million transistors. Unlike the fully unlocked Radeon RX 7900 XTX, which uses the same GPU but has all 6144 shaders enabled, AMD has disabled some shading units on the Radeon RX 7900 XT to reach the product's target shader count. It features 5376 shading units, 336 texture mapping units, and 192 ROPs. The card also has 84 raytracing acceleration cores. AMD has paired 20 GB GDDR6 memory with the Radeon RX 7900 XT, which are connected using a 320-bit memory interface. The GPU is operating at a frequency of 1500 MHz, which can be boosted up to 2400 MHz, memory is running at 2500 MHz (20 Gbps effective).
Being a dual-slot card, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT draws power from 2x 8-pin power connectors, with power draw rated at 300 W maximum. Display outputs include: 1x HDMI 2.1a, 2x DisplayPort 2.1, 1x USB Type-C. Radeon RX 7900 XT is connected to the rest of the system using a PCI-Express 4.0 x16 interface. The card's dimensions are 267 mm x 135 mm x 50 mm, and it features a dual-slot cooling solution
AMD has now published some gaming benchmarks, as well as several performance metrics just as the RTX 4080 becomes orderable. To recap, the RTX 4080 offers 16 GB of GDDR6X VRAM with a 256-bit bus and 717 GB/s memory bandwidth. By contrast, the Radeon RX 7900 XT has 20 GB of slower GDDR6 VRAM but with an 800 GB/s bandwidth because of its wider 320-bit bus. The Radeon RX 7900 XTX goes even further too, with 24 GB of GDDR6 VRAM on a 384-bit bus to deliver a bandwidth of 960 GB/s
The Radeon RX 7900 series will be available from December 13. At launch, the Radeon RX 7900 XT should retail for US$899, with the Radeon RX 7900 XTX priced US$100 higher. In comparison, the RTX 4080 will arrive sooner, but for US$1,199. Overall, AMD is positioning the Radeon RX 7900 series as providing better value for money than the RTX 4080, with added bonuses like DisplayPort 2.1 compatibility and a USB Type-C port. Presumably, AMD will reveal gaming benchmarks within the next few weeks following the RTX 4080's release.
